Swap-Free Accounts in Kenya: What Replaces the Swap

A swap-free account removes overnight interest, and the broker replaces it with a fixed admin charge or a wider spread.

The swap is overnight interest, and a swap-free account removes it

In forex, a swap is the interest you pay or receive for holding a position past the daily rollover. It exists because every currency pair is really two loans: you borrow one currency to buy another. A swap-free account, often called an Islamic account, drops that overnight interest charge.

That matters to Kenyan traders who want their account to stay clear of riba. If you open and close trades inside the same session, the swap never touches you anyway. It only bites when a position is still open at rollover, which for most brokers lands around the New York close.

The trade-off is simple. The broker still has to cover its own cost of carrying your position, so something else takes the swap's place. It is never free, only restructured.

What replaces the swap: an admin fee or a wider spread

Most brokers replace the swap with a fixed administration charge per lot per night. It is usually a flat number rather than a percentage that swings with interest rates, so it is easier to plan around than a variable swap.

The other common model is a slightly wider spread on swap-free accounts. You pay a little more on entry and exit instead of paying nightly. On short trades this can work out cheaper; on positions held for weeks, the admin fee model often does.

Some brokers also restrict swap-free accounts to certain instruments, or exclude them from bonus schemes. Check the broker's own product page rather than assuming, because the detail sits there and not in the marketing headline. Gold and exotic pairs are the usual ones to be treated differently.

Islamic finance concerns go beyond the swap itself

Removing the swap answers one objection, not all of them. The wider debate among Kenyan traders about whether forex is halal or haram usually turns on gharar (excess uncertainty), maysir (speculation treated as gambling), and leverage. A swap-free label does not settle those questions on its own.

Leverage is the sticking point for many. Borrowing from the broker to open a position larger than your deposit is the part scholars most often flag. Some traders reduce this by keeping leverage low and funding the account with money they own outright.

If this is a religious decision for you, the honest answer is that a broker's page cannot make it for you. Speak to someone with proper grounding in Islamic finance, and read the account terms yourself so you know exactly what you are signing.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - utility bill or bank statement; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.

Funding and checking a swap-free account from Kenya

You fund most accounts here through M-Pesa, with Airtel Money, bank transfer and card as the other options. Deposits and withdrawals are in KES, though your trading balance is usually held in US dollars, so the conversion happens somewhere in the chain. Check the broker's funding page for the rate and any charge before you send money.

Timing matters more than people expect. London runs 10:00 to 19:00 EAT and New York runs 15:00 to 00:00 EAT, so the busiest window locally is the 15:00 to 19:00 EAT overlap. If you plan to close positions before rollover, that overlap is when you will be most active.

Before depositing anything, confirm the broker appears on the CMA licensees register at cma.or.ke. The register is public and searchable, and it is the only check that tells you whether the firm is actually authorised to operate here. Do that first, then look at the swap-free terms.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Confirm both in the provider's app and on the broker's funding page, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.

Why a swap-free account still needs a funding plan before you open it

A swap-free label tells you nothing about how the broker accepts money from Kenya. Before opening anything, find the deposit page and confirm M-Pesa, Airtel Money, bank transfer or card are listed for Kenyan clients. If only card and bank transfer appear, your phone-based funding routine will not work as planned.

The order matters. Check the funding rail first, then the registration, then the swap-free status. Readers who check the swap-free badge first often sign up, pass verification, then discover the deposit method they rely on is unavailable or slower than expected.

Keep the M-Pesa statement or confirmation message for each deposit. Kenyan brokers commonly ask for proof of payment during withdrawal checks, and the M-Pesa app holds the reference you will need. Screenshot it at the time, not weeks later when the message has scrolled away.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.

The admin fee clock usually starts at rollover, not at deposit

On a swap-free account, the replacement charge is normally applied when a position is held through the broker's daily rollover point. That point is set by the broker, and it rarely lines up with Kenyan evening hours. Confirm the rollover time in the broker's own documentation before you hold anything overnight.

This catches people who open a trade late in the Nairobi afternoon and close it the next morning, expecting no charge. If the broker's rollover falls inside that window, the admin fee applies even though the position felt short. The fee is tied to holding through rollover, not to how long the trade felt.

There is no way to calculate the cost in advance from this page, because brokers publish their own figures. Read the fee schedule on the broker's site, note the rollover time in EAT, and decide whether holding overnight suits your approach at all.

Hours are shown for the clocks in force today: London is on BST until 25 October, New York is on EDT until 1 November. Kenya does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

A wider spread on a swap-free account changes your entry cost, not your overnight cost

Some brokers replace the swap by widening the spread rather than charging a separate admin fee. That shifts the cost to the moment you open the trade. Two accounts at the same broker can show different spreads, and the swap-free one is often the wider of the two.

This matters for anyone trading frequently. A wider spread is paid on every position, whether or not it is held overnight. A trader who opens and closes within the same session may pay more on a swap-free account than on a standard one, even though no swap was ever due.

Compare the two account types on the broker's own pricing page before choosing. If your trades rarely stay open past rollover, the swap-free version may not be the cheaper structure for you, and the label alone does not settle that question.

Swap-free status does not transfer when you change account type or broker

Swap-free is a property of the specific account, not of you as a client. Opening a second account with the same broker, or switching to a different one, means checking the swap-free terms again from the start. Assumptions carried over from a previous account are a common source of surprise fees.

The same applies if you upgrade an account or move between account tiers. A broker may offer swap-free on one account type and not another, and the admin fee or spread treatment can differ between them. Ask which account the swap-free terms attach to before you fund it.

Keep the confirmation in writing, whether that is an email, a chat transcript or a page in the client area. If a charge later appears that you did not expect, the written terms are what you will refer back to, not a memory of what a support agent said.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.

Checking a broker's Kenyan status is a separate step from checking its swap-free terms

The two checks answer different questions. Swap-free terms tell you how overnight costs are handled. Regulatory status tells you whether the firm may serve Kenyan clients at all. A broker can advertise swap-free accounts prominently while sitting outside the CMA register.

Start at cma.or.ke and search the public licensees register for the exact entity name on the broker's website. Names can differ between a brand and the licensed company behind it, so match carefully rather than assuming the trading name is the licensed one.

If the entity does not appear, treat that as a reason to pause rather than a reason to proceed carefully. The register is the published source, and it is updated by the regulator, not by the broker's marketing page. Check it yourself instead of relying on a badge on the site.
